Entertaiment is the act of engaging in activities for enjoyment. It has come to include many things, from a person watching television in solitude to large performances for an audience. Entertainment has a strong association with amusement and laughter, but some forms of entertainment may have serious purposes, such as ceremonies, religious festivals, and even satire. Entertaiment can also take a variety of different forms, such as a book or film, and it is sometimes difficult to define what kinds of things are considered to be entertainers. The word comes from the Medieval Latin inter tenere, which means “to hold inside,” and may be related to the Indo-European root ten, meaning to stretch out.
