In the United States, North Carolina has been a leader in automobile manufacturing. The state’s first Ford plant opened in 1914 in Charlotte, and by the 1930s, it was the largest automobile factory in the South.
Today, the vast majority of automobiles in use are powered by gasoline or diesel fuel. There are, however, a small number of alternative-fuel automobiles that use alternative fuels such as ethanol or biodiesel. Alternative-fuel engines generally have a smaller power output and are less efficient than gasoline or diesel engines.
Automobile technology has progressed rapidly in the past several decades. Computers have made significant contributions to vehicle design and control, while safety and comfort features have been continuously improved. Many of these developments are the result of research by independent laboratories and automakers themselves.
